Kenya to host global community development practictioners’ conference

Officials of the ACDP-K recently paid a courtesy call on the PS in the State Department for Social Protection in his office at NSSF Building to brief him on the Conference preparations status. The officials were led by the Association Chairman, Dr D. Muia.

NAIROBI, Kenya, MARCH 16, 2020 – Kenya is set to host a global parley bringing together Community Development Practitioners.

The upcoming three-day World Community Development Conference slated for Nairobi between June 29 and July 1, 2020 has been organised by the Association of Community Development Practitioners of Kenya (ACDP-K) in partnership with the Department of Social Development in the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.

ACDP-K is affiliated with the International Association for Community Development (IACDglobal.org) –   an international network of community development practitioners which has accreditation with the United Nations.

The upcoming three-day World Community Development Conference slated for Nairobi between June 29 and July 1, 2020 has been organised by the Association of Community Development Practitioners of Kenya (ACDP-K) in partnership with the Department of Social Development in the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.

Each year, IACD organises the World Community Development Conference (WCDC), usually in partnership with a national Community Development network/association or an IACD member where the conference is to be hosted. In 2019 the WCDC2019 was hosted in Dundee, Scotland.

In 2019, IACD Board resolved that WCDC2020 will be held in Africa and subsequently Nairobi, was chosen as the host city, with the Kenyan Community Development Practitioners Network, Association of Community Development Practitioners-Kenya playing hosts.

WCDC2021 is already slated for June 2021 in Ureki, Georgia.

The Theme of WCDC2020 is: “Our Connectedness, Resilience and Empowerment.”

In 2019, IACD Board resolved that WCDC2020 will be held in Africa and subsequently Nairobi, was chosen as the host city, with the Kenyan Community Development Practitioners Network, Association of Community Development Practitioners-Kenya playing hosts.

The conference has twelve sub-themes – covering the broad areas of interest to community development at this moment in time.

These are:-

  • Theoretical perspectives in community development
  • Community development Practice – change and transformation
  • Community empowerment frameworks
  • Human rights, social protection and social inclusion
  • Role of stakeholders in community transformation
  • Community development standards and Ethics
  • Gender and community development
  • Sustainable development goals and community development
  • Community development training and education
  • Community development within vulnerability contexts
  • And … Social risk management and community development

The Conference, WCDC2020, will be a celebration of community development – a discipline and practice that seeks to nurture the enduring community spirit that holds communities together and that continues to greatly transform society.

The upcoming conference is expected to be attended by  delegates from among other countries; the USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Russia, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Macao), Israel, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda, Congo, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal – and Kenya.
