NAIROBI, Kenya, December 17, 2020 – Kenya’s youthful prolific national soccer team, Harambee Stars striker, Michael Olunga clinched the 2020 J1 League top scorer after scoring in Kashiwa Reysol’s 1-0 win over hosts Sanfrecce Hiroshima at the Edion Stadium on Wednesday, December 16.
A 17th-minute goal by Olunga ended his three-match goal drought in the top-flight league.
With one round of game remaining in the J1 League, the Kenyan International leads the goals chart with 27 goals in 31 games. Brazilians Everaldo and Pereira are second and third with 17 and 15 goals respectively.
Olunga still has a chance to score more goals for his side as they face champions Kawasaki Frontale in the final league fixture on 19th December.
Recently, Olunga was named the Meiji Yasuda J.League Konami Monthly Most Valuable Player (MVP) for August. The 26-year-old secured the award after scoring six goals for his Kashiwa Reysol side in August. The award recognises the most outstanding player in the Japanese top-flight.
Olunga joined Reysol Kashiwa in 2018 from the Chinese Super League side Guizhou Zhicheng. In his first debut, he scored seven goals for Kashiwa in a 13–1 victory over Kyoto Sanga.
Olunga has been in outstanding form for Kashiwa since last season in which he finished with 27 league goals as his side won the J2 season and was promoted to the first division.
This season Kashiwa are in seventh place in the league standings with 52 points after 33 matches.
