Kisii County Becomes Eight County To Pass BBI Bill

KISII, Kenya, February 19, 2021 – Kisii County is the eight-county to pass the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill 2020.

This is Kajiado,  Busia, West Pokot, Kisumu, Tranzoia, Siaya and Homabay counties passed the Bill.

Baringo County was the first county in Kenya to reject the BBI bill in a day of debate that degenerated into chaos at the assembly sitting.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati submitted the draft Bill to the 47 counties for debate on January 26, 2021.

The bill was tabled by majority leader Timothy Ogugu.

During the session, members hailed the bill, saying it will bring unity in the country and spur growth through the establishment of Ward Development Fund.

County Speaker Amos Onderi thanked the Ward Reps’ for passing the bill. Onderi said that the move was anonymous.

Bomorenda MCA John Ombati said that BBI should solve problems at the grassroots level. Ombati denounced insinuations that the members have been bribed by KSh2 million car grant to pass the document.

“Let the public know that we have not been influenced by anybody,” he said.

Erick Janganya said that the document will ensure inclusivity and more funds will be channelled to the counties and wards through ward development fund.

Members of the county assembly urged other counties to follow suit and pass the bill.
