Kisii Has Third FGM Incidents, Undertaken By Medical Practitioners

Speaking in Kisii County during the Anti-FGM Board meeting, the CAS, Ministry of Gender Rachael Shebesh regretted that those engaging in the illegal practice are innovative and now use medical practitioners to circumvent the law.

KISII, Kenya, July 1, 2020 – Kisii County has the third-highest rate of Female Genital Mutilation in the country, authorities have confirmed.

Shockingly, dispute the vice having been outlawed in Kenya, FGM has been medicalized, with doctors and other medical practitioners undertaking it.

In fact, the spike in the incidences of FGM in Kisii County is directly attributed to medicalisation.

Speaking in Kisii County during the Anti-FGM Board meeting, the CAS, Ministry of Gender Rachael Shebesh regretted that those engaging in the illegal practice are innovative and now use medical practitioners to circumvent the law.

CAS Shebesh said that in order to end this vice, the society should change the mindset and attitude. “For every 10 girls, you find 9 of them have undergone the practice,” she said.

She directed the security officers to close down health facilities that carry out  FGM and arrest the perpetrators.

Kisii County Woman Representative, Caucus Caren Magara decried the spiralling cases of Gender-Based Violence and FGM. She attributed the surge to the fact that perpetrators are not arrested and charged in the court.

At the same time, the Woman Rep’ she regretted that victims are reluctant to report due to intimidation and the fear of ostracization by the community. She underscored the need for perpetrators to be brought to account.

She further observed that Kangaroo courts had also contributed to the increase of the incidents with families of the victims and perpetrators negotiating matters without involving authorities.

Kisii County Assembly Youth, Culture, Gender, Sports and Social Service led by Evans Mokoro said that they have set aside a budget to facilitate public awareness and sensitization against FGM.

On his part, Kisii County Commissioner Stephen Kihara directed the local chiefs and assistants to be vigilant in the fight against FGM.

Kisii County CEC Administration and Stakeholders Management Ednah Kangwana said the county government is committed to zero tolerance to gender-based violence and FGM.

Somali, Samburu, Kisii and Nyamira counties are leading in FGM in Kenya.
