KIAMBU, Kenya, October 14, 2020 – Kiambu Governor James Nyoro has said the completion of Kirigiti Stadium will be a game-changer for Kiambu youths and society in general.
Construction of the 16,000 capacity Stadium near Kiambu town has already commenced and its construction projected to be complete in seven months, according to the contractor.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed launched the construction of the facility after the National Government released KSh590 million for its rehabilitation. The facility will occupy an 18-acre piece of land.
‘Kirigiti’ is Kikuyu language corruption of the word ‘cricket.’ The grounds used to host cricket matches during the colonial and post-colonial era, hence the name Kirigiti.
Governor was speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony presided over by Sports CS Amina. She was flanked by Kiambu County Commissioner Wilson wanyanga, County Commander Ali Nuno, and Sports Kenya Chairman Fred Muteti.
The Governor was emphatic on the need for the youths in the county to maintain and protect the facility from destruction.
He at the same time divulged that the County government has also injected money to rehabilitate sports grounds in all 60 wards, even the public grounds that are shared with schools to nurture talents and empower youths.
“My government through the ministry of sport will help upgrade another stadium across the County to promote and empower youths. We thank the head of State, Uhuru Kenyatta for the development he has initiated in the county,” he said.
He said that the sports department is planning to set up a sports academy at Muguga forest to develop and grow talents in Kiambu County. Nyoro further said that the construction of the stadium has led to opening up of roads within Kiambu, which is beneficial to the locals.
Sports CS said the renovation of the stadium will help to empower the youths and improve sporting activities. “The President has insisted this project must be through within 7 months, he wants our youths to grow their talents,” she said.
The stadium will have two basketball courts, a swimming pool and an amphitheatre, netball and volleyball courts, a football pitch and an athletics track.
“The President has insisted that stadiums must be done for the youths of the country. The youths must have a ground to grow and develop their talents,” said CS Mohammed.
The CS promised that the youths will be given priority in dishing out jobs during the construction of the stadium.
“The youths should own and protect the stadium during its construction as they will be given jobs. Make sure that nothing goes wrong with the project and support the contractor. It has happened elsewhere and it cannot happen here,” she said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta in late September this year, while officially opening the upgraded Nyayo National Stadium, said the government is the on the verge of completing the construction of Jamhuri Sports, Leisure and Entertainment Park in Nairobi as well as the upgrading of sporting facilities in Eldoret, Marsabit, Meru, Chuka, Kisumu, Nyeri, Makueni, Wanguru in Kirinyaga and Kirigiti in Kiambu.
