One child has passed on while seven are fighting for their lives in hospital after consuming suspected poisoned food at Bigogo Village Nyaribari Chache, Kisii County.
Three children have been hospitalized at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, one at Ogembo Level Four Hospital and three others at Lenmark Hospital.
It is suspected that someone might have sneaked into their compound and poisoned the food. Confirming the incident area Chief Naftal Ntabo said that one succumbed Monday morning as the rest were rushed to hospital for medication.
Mr Ntabo said that he got a report from the clan elder about the incident. He further said that among those hospitalised is a Form 2 student at Nyaguta Secondary School.
He said the children complained of diarrhoea and vomiting on Sunday evening after taking a meal of githeri for lunch and ugali for supper.
Mr Ntabo said that samples of the food have been taken to the government chemist for analysis. According to the children’s father Charles Onwong’a, they suspect someone might have sneaked into their compound and poisoned the food.
According to the Form 2 student, she said she started feeling unwell while at school and opted to seek permission to go to the hospital to seek medication. The seven are in stable condition in hospitals .
